In the beginning...

A lady, named Mabel answered the Mabel the switchboard operator

phone calls from a switchboard and patched the calls to the intended party if he/she were available. If not available, a message was left with a friend or family member or even a telegram was dispatched to let the intended party know that someone was looking to speak to him/her or there is a message for the intended party. Since the mid 1980’s voicemail became computerized for most of the advanced world and Mabel ceased to be popular amongst the Saturday Tea Social Club, because she had lost her source of information for gossip.

It took twenty years of innovation and etiquette for voicemail to evolve to an application that can truly assist people, both the leavers and the receivers of messages (we all remember voicemail jail!). Today, advanced voicemail systems are called Unified Messaging systems (UM). These UM systems not only collect voice messages, but emails and fax mail as well.

Business owners have been able to increase employee productivity with UM systems because it has helped to reduce the time and management needed with checking mail from multiple sources. This new UM technology also incorporates the ability to track you down like a Bloodhound and when it does find its target (you), you have any number of options including having mail sent to a cellphone, PDA, an alternate PC and even read aloud to you. In short, the UM systems, today can be setup to compliment your work style or your work schedule for the day, week, month or year.
